...........................................................................................................
Phuket Magazine has spent more than ten years displaying the incredible natural beauty of the Andaman region, of which Phuket is a focal point. We are fully aware that our magazine is one of the greatest motivators bringing foreign visitors to this island, and of the responsibility we share when bringing more people here.
Human beings are, after all, the root of the many problems plaguing this region and other environmentally beautiful parts of the world. The local population has expanded exponentially over the past few generations, putting huge pressure on all natural resources here: fisheries, wildlife, rainforests, coral reefs mangrove forests, etc. Helping to bring in more people - tourists - thus carries real responsibilities.
The decision to bring in foreign tourists and make money from tourism was a Thai one. While it was the Thai government and well-to-do businessmen who were originally responsible for this decision, there can be no doubt that the great majority of local people on Phuket are extremely enthusiastic about the tourism industry, accepting both the wealth and the problems it brings to their home island.
Though we follow trends set by Thais, ARTASIA has considered its role carefully, and has always tried to act responsibly. Here is some of the philosophy behind Phuket Magazine:
The Andaman coast of southern Thailand is an area of incredible natural beauty. By displaying the best of this through beautiful photography and high-quality reproduction, we hope to give both locals and foreigners a better appreciation of this. Such awareness, we believe, will help encourage people take the steps needed to protect it.
We believe that Phuket and its people will be best served by bringing in smaller, rather than greater numbers of tourists, while maximising per-head spending. This means focusing on high-yield markets, while providing up-market facilities and services here in Phuket. Aside from leaving more money in his wake, the wealthier, individual tourist is generally better-educated, more environmentally aware and more willing to reach out to communicate with the local people than are those travelling on cheap group tours. Our high-quality products are designed to enhance the up-market image of Phuket.
The magazine aims to balance it responsibilities to both advertisers and readers in a fair manner. The magazine does not cover up for poor quality services by writing glowing reports because the operator is an advertiser. In a relatively small community like that on Phuket the magazine cannot single out individual services for criticism. Instead, our pages praise those doing a good job, while by-passing the poor.
...........................................................................................................
Phuket Magazine boasts that it tries to display the beauty of Phuket and the Andaman region, and indeed it has become famous for beautiful images of this environmentally spectacular region. But we also want to run serious articles with real substance that enrich the readers understanding of many different aspects of the greater Andaman region, and of Thailand.
Magazine Advance Planning
Phuket Magazine has an editorial year-plan drawn up well in advance, with special themes for each issue through the year. Usually the lead story and one or more other features, and sometimes departments, are tailored to support the featured topic. Contributors wishing to write for the magazine should ask to see this list, and suggest story ideas in line with this. Often the editor has planned stories in need of a writer.
Proposing Story Ideas
If you have an idea that you think will be suitable for Phuket Magazine please propose it to the Associate Editor in Phuket in a one or two paragraph synopsis. We recommend against writing on speculation without first clearing the idea with the editor. Most stories submitted in this manner do not fit the planned needs of the magazine and are rejected. E-mail: editor-p@aapress.net
Rights Purchased
Phuket Magazine usually purchases one-time rights only. Since we are unable to pay international standard rates, we buy no exclusive rights at all, and each author is free to resell the story again. At the same time we ask each author to tell the editor if a story being proposed has been used elsewhere, with name of publication and date published. Stories specifically commissioned for Phuket Magazine must not appear in other publications until 6 months after they have appeared in Phuket Magazine.
Payment
Payment for each story should be agreed by the author and editor in advance. The editor will then include the agreed fee in an Assignment Form to be delivered to, faxed or E-mailed to the writer.
Unless otherwise agreed in advance, payment will be made by crossed cheque in the authors' name in Thai Baht. Cheques are normally issued after publication of the story, before the following magazine appears. No invoice is required from the writer, but the writer will be required to provide ARTASIA PRESS with a legal receipt upon payment. This is usually a photocopy of the recipient's passport, signed, with date and amount of money received.
Photographs
We rarely purchase photographs from outside sources. ARTASIA has its own extensive photo library, plus four in-house photographers; John Everingham, who travels often in the region, plus two other photographers based in Phuket and one based in Bangkok. We will purchase one-time rights to photographs when the contributor has something that we either don't have, or cannot do ourselves.
Editorial Requirements
Natural History
With the photography focusing heavily on the geographical beauty, we are always looking for in-depth stories about some particular aspect of the natural history here. Stories ideas may delve into any of these topics: the rainforests, animal life, insects, the coral reefs, eco-systems, marine life, geology, pre-history, weather and natural phenomena,
Humanity
There is a rich human tapestry through the southern Thailand region, with stream of human settlement having come from many directions. Cultural influences from Buddhism, Islam, Animism, Christianity etc have created interesting social structures that can be examined. We are always interested in new 'people' stories.
Traditional Lifestyles
Traditional lifestyles are disappearing, and we are particularly interested in recording in both words and on film aspects of culture that are likely to disappear soon.
Modern Lifestyles
Interesting windows on modern lifestyles and trends in the region can make good stories for the magazine.
Development
We are interested in some development issues, particularly as they impact environment or change traditional lifestyles. These can often fit into our Environment section.
Tourism
The tourist industry pays for Phuket Magazine, and we report on it sporadically. Interesting stories on visitors - people stories - or industry trends will be considered.
Travel Stories
Phuket Magazine rarely runs typical 'travel' stories, accounts of somebody's visit to this place or that. But we do want stories that profile the many beautiful places within our geographic region, so, when thinking along these lines, the writer's task is to find angles or story lines in which the particular location becomes the backdrop. This allows for the use of photographs from beautiful locations, something we try to do at least once in every magazine. Using he people of a particular location and examining their lifestyle or particular activities is a good means to profile a location.
Lead Features
The small words in the magazine's name, 'The Greater',
are critical in the choice of topics for lead features. We are not restricted
to the island of Phuket, and the magazine takes in the entire Thai Andaman
coast from Burma to Malaysia. The range of topics is equally broad,
as a look at a year plan will show. Favourite topics are those that
allow the magazine to showcase the natural beauty of this region in
photography.
Typical length: 2,000 - 2,500 words
Supporting Features
The magazine generally runs two or three supporting features, and the range of topics for them is as wide as it is for Lead Features. Often, at least one of these supporting stories will be related to the theme of the Special Issue, often another angle on the same or related topic hat gives depth of the Special issue theme.
The second or third supporting feature will serve almost the opposite purpose of the first. This one will generally focus on something as far removed from the Special Issue theme as possible. When making this 'opposite' choice we will be thinking of the visual mix. If the theme brings a lot of photos of water into the magazine, the 'opposite' will likely be something land-based. A cultural story will often serve as a balancing final feature in an issue with a lot of ocean photographs.
The opposite is also true when the Special Issue theme
is a land-based subject. We will then need a water-based topic, with
the choice of these being critical to the overall flavour of the magazine.
Length: 1,200 - 1,500 words
Culture Stories
Culture is not restricted to Phuket Island. Buddhist
and Islamic cultures are country-wide, as are other aspects of cultural,
and we often use these topics to bring the reader into contact with
the broader Thai nation. Any topic related to Thai culture is a candidate
for this section.
We do not run culture stories in every issue. We often use these to
balance an issue when lots of waterborne stories are used. These can
also be categorised with 'Supporting Features'.
Length: 1,200 - 1,500 words
Food Stories
Every issue of Phuket Magazine carries a food story,
usually as introduction to the Restaurant Guide, which always carries
many ads. These stories focus on all aspects of eating and creating
food in Thailand. We feature unusual or interesting dishes from Thai
cuisine. We want unusual or important fruits, vegetables, spices or
other ingredients. Unusual cooking practices. Seafood stories are always
popular. Often we have a list of Food stories for which we are looking
for writers. Contributors looking for food stories may ask the Editor
if he/she is interested in looking at the list.
Length: 800 - 1,000 words
Restaurant Reviews
We want two of these per issue where possible. Short and snappy. We want two restaurants serving different cuisine, and from different locations as possible.
Often these are dictated by advertising needs - the
advertising sales people are allowed to offer restaurant advertisers
one review within their year's contract period. But we also review restaurants
that are not advertisers, usually places that we know are good, and
are eager to recommend to our readers. We cover restaurants big and
small, rich and poor. Back street noodle shops can be just as interesting
as resort balconies in the sunset. Writers are free to ask if we have
restaurants waiting to be reviewed, or make suggestions to the Editor.
Length: 600 words each
Phuket People
Big, small, rich, poor we want them all, just so long
as the stories behind them are interesting. Thai or foreign just so
long as they have a strong connection to or influence upon the island
of Phuket. We often have a list if interesting personalities waiting
to be assigned to writers, so feel free to ask the editor. Or please
make suggestions to the editor.
Length: 1,200 - 1,500 words
Environment Stories
The original concept was to dedicate these two pages
to the local people, many of whom come across a copy of the magazine
but cannot read it. Copies are taken home by hotel workers, boatboys,
drivers etc. The idea is to translate these environmental stories into
Thai as a means to help raise the level of environmental awareness amongst
this sector of island society.
Since the current level of environmental awareness is low, we need relatively
simple issues either rooted in or with relevance to the local scene.
Dealing with local problems, or bringing awareness to practices that
will cause environmental distress in future, is ideal. Wherever possible
try to suggest possible solutions to problems, drawing from others'
experience with similar situations in other parts of the world when
possible.
Typical length: 1,000 - 1,200 words
The Expat Diary
Here the imagination of the writer can run slightly amok. This is light reading, fun reading. It's the one part of the magazine readers turn to and expect to be entertained. There are no limits on the topics that can be taken on. It can be fact or fiction, or some inter-weaving of the two.
Perhaps the only requirement is this: after reading
Expat Diary the reader should come away with a little more insight into
some aspect of Thailand or Phuket. The stories thus need to be Thailand
or Phuket based, with local colour or events as the backdrop, or as
the
main theme. The very name suggests to the reader that the writer, the Expat, is more experienced in the ways of Thailand than the visitor,
and during the process of gaining this experience he/she will have picked
up nuggets of wisdom or insight worth passing on. While passing them
on it is important to keep the reader entertained.
Typical length: 1,500 words
Travel News
This section of the magazine is aimed at a completely different audience, meaning both content and style must be entirely different to the everything else in the magazine. This section is aimed at the travel industry, specifically at travel agents in foreign countries who sell holidays in Phuket.
Phuket Magazine has wide distribution overseas to the travel industry, through the international travel shows (WTM, ITB, AFT etc) and through tour operators' offices in Thailand. This section is aimed at helping overseas travel agents keep abreast of developments in the world of travel in Thailand. While we focus on Phuket, this section can also take in more important developments throughout Thailand. For some travel agents selling tours of Thailand through retail stores in Europe, this magazine might be their only source of information on developments in Thailand.
This is specifically a news section. Travel industry news. Thus the copy must be in the style of news; factual, dry, to the point. It is basically a listing of facts and information in a well thought out sequence, without fancy leads or conclusions. We focus on new developments in accommodation, air transport, government legalities, price changes and important personnel (hotel GM level, but rarely below this). We name names, give amounts of money spend when available and indicate star ratings. Facts and figures on the travel industry, please, presented as news.
